At least three years ago, I took advantage of the free $1500 being given to those who wanted to be fitted for a Neuromonics unit; the remainder of the money came from my own pocket. I wore the unit everyday as often as I could, no matter where I was, always wearing the earphones provided which are much more comfortable than ear buds. These wrap around the ear rather than held into the ear by pressure. After many months, I was able to take the unit off for long periods of time; but not long afterwards, I began suffering with H and recruitment, which, as time passed, became even more of a problem than the T. The high pitches playing from the Neuromonics unit aggravated the sound sensitivity, and so I set the unit aside.

Two years ago, I developed signs of fibromyalgia: stinging arms and legs, and headaches at the back of my head which now seems to be interferring with anything I hope to accomplish through sound; also, new noises in my head have developed from these intense tension headaches. I use ice packs on my head on a daily basis and take a headache med on occasion.

In my arsenal, I have either purchased or recorded CDs of pink noise, white noise, and all kinds of nature sounds. Petroff's tinnitus mitigation CDs were my best purchase, as well as a pink noice CD from the Hyperacusis Network.

These days, I wear a fannie pack everywhere I go, into which I carry my CD player, onto which is connected the headset I was given with the Neuromonics unit. Many hours each day I listen to whatever noises I can tolerate. Lately, pink noise has been my primary selection.

All of the above goes on in my life while I continue to play soft instrumental music-- I'm a bass player -- with my brother at local restaurants. On those dates, I wear fitted earplugs. Numerous places, I am not fond of visiting. The movie theater, I no longer attend. Other noisy environments, such as boisterous gatherings, I prefer to stay away from.

I think, once I get the headaches controlled, my life will be much better. They intefer too much with my initial intent for using noise. Once I gain control of the headaches, which cause my ears additional problems, I think I'll be able to go back to wearing my hearing aids. I've set those aside over the past six weeks. Incidentally, the T, H and recruitment that I experience developed as a result of numerous things: work in a noisy environment (military service) for which I was given a 10% disability; Eustachian tube dysfunction which caused pressure damage after a flight to Ariziona eight or nine years ago; pain medications that increase T; and changes that happen for unknown reasons.

Still, I continue with noise therapy and to take xanax -- perhaps for the remainder of my life. My continuing feeling, however, is that someday I will be healed.
