We're inviting individuals with chronic tonal tinnitus to participate in an investigation of an online procedure that could potentially reduce tinnitus loudness.
Participation is completely free, there are no advertisements, and you will not receive any payment. We are simply interested in testing this procedure. As such, we importantly make no guarantee whatsoever that participation will reduce the loudness of your tinnitus.
If you agree to participate, you will report certain aspect of your tinnitus (e.g., pitch/loudness), and you will repeatedly play a video game where tones near your tinnitus frequency are played when the goal of the game is accomplished. The theoretical premise is that if you play a video game where "neighbors" of your tinnitus pitch are consistent paired with accomplishing the goal of the game, then your brain will (over
weeks) represent the tinnitus pitch less (and the neighbors more) thereby reducing your tinnitus loudness. This logic is similar to the recent study about using vagus nerve stimulation to treat tinnitus (Engineer, N.D., et al.. Nature, 2011. 470(7332): p. 101-4).
