Pool - According to the Oxford English Dictionary, 'barber' derives from 'barbaric'. The first use of barber occurs when a man is approached in an alehouse by a gentleman with prodigious whiskers who offers to give him a haircut. The result is described as 'barbaric' and the bewhiskered ne'er-do-well run out of town for being "a loathesome barber". For many years, it was illegal in Europe for a barber to give haircuts to people. The story is told of a fellow who was so committed to the trade that he gave free haircuts to animals, who lined up for blocks like an unsettling Macy's Day Parade when he would come to town with shearing scissors, shaving kit, and pomades that reeked for miles. ******Dave reveals -I'm like a watchman, not a deceptive fanatic. It's a gift God has given me, Dave, you have mistaken neurotic behavior for a gift, a story as old as the Bible.RTM

It's a phrase people use here quite a bit when they don't want to offend sensibilities. It usually means "I don't want to light your fuse, but I think you're talking rubbish".
