I had an unusual experience today. I was at my uncle and aunts farm, sitting with them and my Dad in their kitchen having coffee, when I heard a cat meow. Kind of baffled I asked my aunt where that cat came from, since they haven't - as far as I knew - had one for ages. My aunt told me it was a wild cat that they saw very little off since it wouldn't go anywhere near anybody. It just goes to their barn, as well as neighbouring barns to catch mice, but disapears when there's people around.
My aunt also told she has dry cat food that she sometimes put out, just to keep the cat around, since they are pleased with having a mice-free barn. Before she'd finished speaking the cat was very briefly in the house but then fled. It has never ever done that before.
After coffee I went to one of the barns to fetch the garden furniture for my uncle and aunt and the cat came to me, mewing, but as soon as I reached out for it, it went to another "room" in the barn (there are four that are linked together). Then the cat came back meowing again, and I decided to follow it, as it was as if it was trying to show me something.
For a while I thought it had kittens hidden somewhere. When the cat and I reached the barn the farthest (right word?) back, the cat startled circling around my legs, all of a sudden very confident with me. I just followed and the cat stopped right in front of an old cupboard. I looked on top of it and saw a bag of dry cat food. That was what the cat wanted, and I'm amazed it showed it to me. I had aboslutely no idea where my aunt keeps that sort of thing.
I gave the cat some food, and it ate a bit but then it just came and sat with me, meowing and being very very friendly. I sat for very long with the cat till my Dad and uncle came to the barn. Then the cat backed off. I went to sit with everybody in the garden, and the cat did actually follow me, but staying about 1 meter from me. Only when I went where there weren't anybody else did it come and circle my legs, clearly wanting attention.
Well, while my uncle and aunt couldn't believe their own eyes, I just thought it was a very cute thing, and my heart totally melted. I totally forgot my cat allergy, though I got to feel the effect. Anyway, when sitting there with the cat I found a tick on it's neck. I've got plenty of experience removing ticks from my dogs, but never with a cat that normally don't go anywhere near people, so I dared not attempt to remove it, in fear of scaring the cat and spoiling it's confidence in me. A very very beautiful cat btw. Black with a tiny white spot on the chest and very green eyes.
I'll go back during the week-end and try to remove the tick if possible, but I'd like advice from the "cat people" on this board. First off I don't wish to scare the cat, but I also don't wish for it to go mad and scratch me. After all, no matter how very friendly with me, it is a cat that avoids people, so I don't know what to expect when attempting to remove the tick.
