Posts: 32 06/27/12 5:35 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I see. I guess as long as you're unaffected by it, it doesn't really matter. I'm just in the dark as to what 'unaffected' truly means. For example, there are people with arthritis that feel pain but deal with it well who might conclude that they are unaffected by arthritis. But the objective truth is that they have arthritis, and thus pain, and are invariably affected by it. To me, at this moment on my journey, tinnitus is a sound that immediately is uncomfortable and unacceptable, without any conscious thought. It makes a sound and I feel bad. It hurts (I will see a neurotoligst) It's automatic and seemingly an innate quality to the sound itself. I may change my feelings about this innate response, but ultimately I will still be objectively affected by it, no matter what I say. As a result of my experience with tinnitus I changed the entire direction of my life. As a result of my experience with tinnitus I am responding to your post right now ... as I have responded to thousands of posts and e-mails over the years. Tinnitus matters to me a lot. Does my tinnitus cause me to suffer like it once did? No. But my tinnitus has not changed a whit, I have. Does my tinnitus still affect me? Hell yes. If it didn't, I wouldn't be here. smn

I am scared that the 'change' you wrote about is nothing more than coping with the uncomfortable - which is to say that it really isn't change at all. If this sound can become so innocuous that I could read a book in the library, without sound tricks or grasping for noise generators, then I will believe the hype. If habituation truly is what I have been reading about, then it shouldn't matter that the tinnitus is blaring in my ears when I'm in a quiet bookstore or library. If I knew for a fact that the noise can become this innocuous, then I would let my guard down and try everything to embrace that change. It's hard to believe, atm.

Likely most of what you have been reading about habituation is inaccurate, but your conclusion is spot on. It's a question of getting to the point where your tinnitus does not matter. I'm doing nothing at this point in the way of treatment, I've gone through the motions of TRT twice but when I was doing it, habituation wasn't my goal and I didn't really do it for me it wasn't gonna' work from the beginning my mind was against it working I don't know how to explain it, that's why I said some can't accept the sounds I just cope

Posts: 472 06/27/12 6:33 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I really was just going through the motions, I knew it wasn't going to work for me, I wore the devices 12 hours a day & I was aware of them the whole time that's why I think there might be something different about my brain I just can't have this noise in my head I completely reject it and fight it, I can't get past that I know this must seem completely illogical......

Actually I understand exactly what you are saying; there's nothing illogical about it at all. Let me ask you one question. You say that you were aware of the devices the whole time. The answer to tinnitus-related distress lies within us and only within us. And once there is no tinnitus-related distress, tinnitus becomes nothing. So in that sense - yes, we are the cure. smn

I think it was just the way it sounded with the tinnitus I couldn't get past the idea of putting another noise in my ears all day, it was just more uncomfortable with the extra sound on then without it I thought I might be able to habituate without them....

When a patient has trouble tolerating the devices, you go back to square one and ask the patient to wear the devices in the "off position" for a few weeks. I'm no longer in practice, but I'd love to have had you for a patient! Not saying I'd necessarily have done any better, but I'd have gone about it differently. smn
