Posts: 11219 08/06/12 9:41 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Tags : None For a while now I've entertained the idea of an OT debating thread. It said it was quite entertained, thank you. I have a basic idea, but would like input to flesh out the rules. I had the idea of a thread, or multiple threads, wherein someone posed a question, and people split into two teams either supporting or opposing the idea/proposition. This is a little different from those High School debating competitions. I have just two stipulations which I regard as iron-clad. 1) Unlike debating contests, people are not assigned to teams, irrespective of their belief. They really do have to believe in what they're arguing for. So people volunteer. 2) Any debate follows the general rules off this forum. i.e. don't get personal. If someone on your team personally insults the other, it's a penalty. Beyond that I'm not sure where to go. How would we declare a winner? Who gets the next choice of question? Can there be multiple threads? Should there be a limit on their duration? Supposing I were to propose, as a debate statement 'Religious tolerance has become... you know what - forget it. It couldn't work. Loop

I totally agree with llilly (for once!!) If people have a debate in which they argue what they already believe, I doubt that anyone would change anyone else's opinion - it would just be like any other thread. I'd take it a step further - there could be two portions of the debate: choose a topic, and randomly assign people to debate one side of it - and then after a week or so, make everyone switch sides, and argue for the position they had been opposing before. It could be an excellent opportunity for people to learn the validity of both sides of a debate, and exercise their brains in the process.

That was the major basis of this idea: an organised, civilised discussion between people who actually believe what they type. We've had plenty of uncivilised versions of the above (and I've been a frequent participant), and arguing AGAINST your POV based on arbitrary... actually same as before: forget it. We're not capable of it. Though FWIW I agree with Reph it would be better if admins joined in. My idea involved the assumption they would. Why should an admin (whoever they are) be exempt from conversation, asuming they ban themselves if they transgress the rules? And I hope Dave is alright because I just arranged to have a book mailed to him from England, and if he doesn't get it, it'll be a waste of money.
