How long does the worsened tinnitus last after discontinuation?

Posts: 52 08/20/12 3:03 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Same thing happened to me, I took Sertraline (Zoloft). I'd get random bursts of a very high-pitched hiss. It stopped occurring a day or two after discontinuation.

Posts: 35 08/21/12 1:53 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I think SSRIs may have this effect for some people (others feel free to correct me if I'm off the mark here). I myself take mirtazapine (not an SSRI) and find it invaluable for sleep (I probably wouldn't without it), plus these sorts of medications assist quite a bit in taking the edge off the anxiety some experience in having to deal with T. I'm sure in your case hoops the spike in T won't last long - these medications aren't known to be ototoxic (again, not a clinician but this is what i've heard from those that are) - so stress less and try to think of more important things... like how you aim to have fun today

Very Deabilitating, it effects me greatly, I put myself in a box and stay there until it goes otherwise I will be in the box forever, maybe literally, will see what happens. I am very miserable right now.

(At least it is for two of the hundreds of antidepressants on the market.) But I'd hate to think folks reading this board might deny themselves the benefit of anti-depressants (assuming they are indicated) based on the unlikely possibility (for them) that the drugs might temporarily make their tinnitus louder. And by the way, hoops, if your tinnitus remains louder after stopping the anti-depressants, then it wasn't the drugs that made it louder in the first place. smn Last Edited By: smn 08/21/12 7:17 AM. Posts: 97 08/21/12 9:18 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I disagree about it not being the drugs, like I said its the same behaviour pattern as last time, I took citalipram for 3 days at 10-20mg and my tinnitus spiked for a couple of weeks, anyway, I just collected my repeat prescription for valium which should knock me out quick, I must also say to anyone reading this that I have gone through some stress and la k if sleep recently but I think the Paxil just didn't help At all and like I said before, I used to take citalipram without any problems but for some reason it spikes my tinnitus, I am just very sad to have to be one of not many people where antidepressants effect my tinnitus in a bad way, I like Valium though it makes me "mmmmmmmm i dont give a !$ mmmmmmm followed near enough immediately by zzzzzzzzz lol.

Here are the facts ... None of the classes of antidepressants causes structural auditory damage, nor do any of their metabolites (breakdown products). Some antidepressants have been reported to cause an increase in tinnitus loudness by virtue of temporary physiologic (functional) changes in the auditory system, but when the drugs and their metabolites have left your body, those changes revert back to baseline. Therefore, if you notice an increase in tinnitus loudness after starting an antidepressant and if the increase persists for more than two to three weeks after cessation of the antidepressant, then whatever caused the increase in tinnitus loudness, it was not the antidepressant. smn

Posts: 97 08/21/12 12:28 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Not last time when I was on the citalipram, the tinnitus cranked up within a day or two but went away after two weeks, I took Paxil last Thursday and my tinnitus cranked up unbearably and has stayed the same so I truly hope it goes back down, I'm going to take Valium tonight before bed and for the next 3 nights, I'll keep you updated.

That's actually great news for you - because since you are convinced that the increase was, indeed, due to the Paxil, you may rest assured that it will soon return to normal. Which, I believe, is what you were trying to get at with your first post in this thread. smn

I had never noticed my ears ringing ever before in my lifetime. Though the ringing has diminished since I first noticed it, the ringing remains, even though I have not taken another dose of Wellbutrin since. Correlation does not equal causation, but I have a difficult time believing that the single dose of Wellbutrin did not initiate the onset of tinnitus. Was the ringing already there, but I just hadn't noticed it before I took a single dose of Wellbutrin? I just have a difficult time believing that...

Things must have gotten to a point where you and your doctor felt that that particular significant pharmacological step was necessary. Has that situation resolved or does it remain? Please do not answer these questions on the board. Just consider the possibility that the tinnitus you have long ascribed to that single dose of Wellbutrin XL might in actuality not be related to the medication at all! smn

A voluntary report is a report on a side effect after a drug is introduced on the market which may have no causal relationship with the drug. In placebo-controlled clinical trials, tinnitus is not listed as a side effect. rob x 2
