I re-read my post, and had a good chuckle - about the cottonwool, I can see why you were having such a good go !
You moisten the cottonwool with Swedish Bitters, then put the moistened cottonwool in your ears. Then put a bit of dry cottonwool over that in each ear, otherwise a bit will drip out onto your pillow. Best done overnight.
This really does help with certain types of tinnitus.
The reflexology has also been known to help a lt of T sufferers.

I have nothing personal to gain from sharing this information. I am delighted that I have managed to cause a bit of a laugh, and hope that some of you will look into these alternatives.

Any idea why the drug goes into the ear canals? Based on the data I've seen, virtually none of the drug would be able to pass through the eardrum and then the relatively large air-filled middle ear to reach the passages to the inner ear.

Researchers have never been able to get topical drugs into the inner ears without resorting to surgery.

I don't know why it works, I don't know how it works, but it works.
I think what I'll do is scan in the write-up from Maria Treben's book about Swedish Bitters, which is, amongst other things, a very powerful antiseptic and external healing agent. If you were to read and get a general overview of what Swedish Bitters does, how it is either applied externally or taken internally, you'd begin to understand more about this herbal preparation.
I can personally state that I have recommended this to many people for various problems, and it really works. ( I have a deep interest in herbs, and have some interesting stories of my own to tell about Swedish Bitters, which I have also used for dogs, cats and goldfish ).
If you are interested that I should do this, tell me how - I do have the use of an e-board I could put the write-up on, then you could go and read it there, or you could tell me how to get this information to you ? I will take the trouble if there is interest.

Thanks for the welcome. I was beginning to think I had bitten off more than I could chew!
You are correct about the pressure points - balancing of the glands and many digestive and nervous functions actually occurs when pressure (rather than massage - massage is very pleasant and relaxing) is applied to "sore" points on the feet - or hands, as the case may be.
Something I enjoy about reflexolgy is the fact that the reflexologist does not prescribe medicine - the most advice you would get is to perhaps take a herbal tea to help a certain type of stress-related problem - and generally does not interfere with what you eat.
To give you an idea of what is happening with this therapy, I can tell you that there are nearly 15 000 practising reflexologist in the UK alone, and over 1 million people here visited a reflexologist last year.
I have also discovered that this is happening in the USA as well, it is very popular there (I have e-friends there who practise reflexology).
There is a great move afoot worldwide to alternative therapies, and in many cases there is no logical or scientific explanation for successes of these therapies. I firmly believe that there is a place for all types of healing, and that people should go for the method that works for them. For example, where I come from, in South Africa, there are sangomas (witchdoctors) who ply their trade with great results, so who are we to dictate what works and what doesn't ?
I personally do some reflexology - for my family and my friends - but there are often times when a medical doctor is needed, especially when there is perhaps a drug available that can solve a problem quickly, or there is an obvious problem that does not need the holistic approach. So there is room for everyone in the healing business, and people just need to be made aware that they have a wide choice. I have met many medical doctors who have a degree of tolerance of alternatives, with the view : "If it's working for you, do it".

So, the success of reflexology to help tinnitus would vary from one sufferer to another, and would depend on the cause, of which there are many. My view is that, if some are so desperate they will try anything, this could be considered as an alternative to try - nothing lost, and maybe something gained. A good treatment helps the whole body and also the mind.

Further, I think it is great that there are support groups, there are quite a few for tinnitus, but I have seen that the general hope is for a medical drug cure - well, people, why not look at alternatives, as many of you have pointed out, the problem is not considered important enough to spend millions on research, and perhaps at least some of you don't have to suffer for the rest of your lives.

I treated myself with bitters, this was a few weeks ago. I actually suffered for a while before I remembered the bitters from having treated Peter with it. My problem has not come back. Mine was a light ringing sound, and I found myself getting used to it, then I thought : "I don't have to put up with this", and used the bitters. I was very stressed out at the time.
As far as Peter is concerned :
1 His problem is "buzzing", he doesn't mention till it gets louder. Then we use the bitters overnight, and the problem clears up for sometimes weeks, sometimes months. It does come back, and I don't know why that should be, unless it is also triggered by stress, as he is generally a very laid back guy, but from time to time things get to him. I really don't know.
2 We think we pinpoint his problem to around the time he was told he had very high cholesterol, about four years ago, but that could be a coincidence. He now takes medication for the cholesterol problem.
3 Yes, we treat him with Swedish Bitters, did so last night, in fact, and this morning when he woke up the buzzing had gone. he complained about it yesterday and this is the reason I found your website, amongst others, because I wanted to find out more about tinnitus, and whether someone had actually found a CURE for it !
4 The first time Peter had it, it was really troubling him, and he went to the doctor about it. The doctor told him there was no cure, and he would have to live with it. That started my mission into reflexology and Swedish Bitters - the bitters helped, and he did not go with the reflexology "thing" at that time.

So, I probably cannot imagine how bad your tinnitus is, how it feels, how it sounds, but having experienced it on a mild scale, and hating the experience, I felt I had to share the little bit I know about it.
