Posts: 0 06/20/01 12:52 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	On a very warm day in Chicago six years ago, a strong ringing in my right ear started. The next day I ran to a doctor's office and was diagnosed with a cochlear tear. I went through surgery which was supposed to eliminate the ringing that was driving me crazy. But when I woke up after the surgery, the ringing was still there. I started going from one doctor's office to another to see who could stop the ringing. I went through different treatments but nothing made my life better. Finally, I heard about a doctor in Israel who was having excellent results treating soldiers with tinnitus -- and I decided to give it a try. He gave me a whole new kind of treatment and my ringing went into a very low level. For four years I've been experiencing a normal life. This is my real story with tinnitus. Michael Cohen

His treatment is very individualized and therefore he will probably want to discuss your particular tinnitus. This is because at least from my experience, he does not use a system that can be generalized. He takes calls but not emails. His phone number is: 011-972-53-714-699, reachable nights, Israel time, which is about mid-afternoon based on New York time. He takes calls nightly except Fridays and Saturdays.

Is promoting Dr. Shemesh's treatment your job or avocation? What other forms of tinnitus treatment did you attempt prior to seeing Dr. Shemesh? What was the time frame from your onset of tinnitus to your improvement? Answers to these simple questions would aid us greatly in judging the veracity of your statements.

Over the past 17 years, Shemesh has become a believer in the benefits of self-hypnosis or relaxation techniques to teach the brain to disregard the constant noise. He teaches these techniques, customized according to the needs and personality of the patient, and says they are very effective. A study of 200 soldiers he conducted with colleagues in the Israel Defense Forces found a notable improvement in the quality of life of tinnitus patients. They reported an overall success rate of 90% - "higher than anywhere else in the world" - and many patients said the noise had "completely disappeared." The health funds are reluctant to send members with tinnitus to Shemesh's clinics, he says, instead referring patients to their own ear-nose-and-throat specialists. "Even when they do, they pay only NIS 150 for a visit, which is way below the actual cost." As a result, the waiting list at Ichilov is an incredible four years, while at Hadassah it has been "brought down to two years." Prof. Joseph Elidan, head of Hadassah's otolaryngology department, says that in order to increase income that could be invested in teaching more doctors' the Shemesh technique, a new effort has been launched to encourage foreign tourists with tinnitus to come here for treatment. But since the charge is $5,000 for seven visits over a period of 5 weeks, plus the costs of tests and a hotel stay, one would think such an offer will attract only the well-off who are really suffering."

Does every department in the hosital have a for-profit subsidiary to fund their teaching? www.hadassah.org.il/about/01-history.htm It's my understanding that at least one doctor (Dr. Nagler) has visited Israel with the express intent of learning Dr. Shemesh's technique, and was disappointed. Doesn't sound much like "teaching more doctors" is the real goal of this enterprise. Perhaps they could provide some financial statements on how much money the tinnitus program has brought in, and how many doctors they've trained using that money? I'm also a bit confused about the 'self-hypnosis' claims. In another thread, Michael Allen Cohen listed self-hypnosis as one of the techniques that did NOT work for him ... And how does the self-hypnosis relate to the custom herbal pills that are mixed up for each patient? The more you dig, the weirder it gets ...

You are writing under some assumed name, making innuendos about the largest and most respected teaching and research and patient hospitals in the Region, one that comes up with many advances, whose doctors treat all equally, and yet you seem obsessed about profit centers at Hadassah. As for the treatment for tinnitus, I receive medicinal treatment which is both simple and effective. I was offered and tried the medicinal treatment in tandem with self-hypnosis but found that I didn't need both. KISS: keep it simply, stupid, was and is my criterion for tinnitus treatment, so I dropped the self-hypnosis. The medication and being thankful for what I have in life is enough. But each case is different. So if, for example, ear devices work for some people, good; if medicinal treatment works for some people, good, too. Human bodies are complicated; what works for one does not work for all. The practice of medicine is an art, hopefully with moral integrity, but it is not a science nor should it be a cult of "The only way is..." I know of no doctor or psychologists that would shew reluctant's to share their medical knowledge. Thats all we are saying, "just want the facta ma'am."

That is why he cannot tell you what he does. I heard he spends alot of time with his patients getting to know them. It seems to me the more time a doctor spends with you the more faith you have in his treatment. When I was a child I had an uncle that was a doctor. When I got sick and knew he was coming to see me I started feeling better even before he got there. That is how much faith I had in him. Sort of a placebo effect. Who knows maybe if my uncle was around today just knowing I was going to see him would make my tinnitus feel better. It does not matter to me what Dr. Shemesh does as long as it works. I would run to Israel right now if he would gurantee his treatment would work on me. I doubt he would do that. Jeffreylee

It does not matter to me what Dr. Shemesh does as long as it works. Ahhh...but we have no way of knowing if "it" works if we don't know what "it" is and no one can test "it." That's why science and medicine advance with published, detailed methods, published and shared data, and confirmation of results by others. There's no other way to sort out the science from the scams and junk. Jim

If you click on my name you'll find that in my profile, I list my full name, address and phone #. You don't list any of these. It's a simple question really, what is your relationship with the "largest and most respected teaching and research and patient hospitals in the Region, one that comes up with many advances, whose doctors treat all equally"? Seems that "they treat all equally", except those who want to understand what their tinnitus treatment progam actually does, and perhaps even duplicate it if it's as efficacious as claimed.

The above is a personal attack on Tom Boismier, a well-respected vestibular specialist in Fort Wayne, Indiana, who is merely inquiring about the efficacy of the Hadassah Tinnitus Program which Michael Cohen has been advertising on this board, and about the extent of Michael Cohen's financial involvement with that program. Although Cohen's post is, indeed, a personal attack on Tom's character (Tom is asking legitimate questions under his real name and makes no innuendos at all), I believe that it [Cohen's post] should not be deleted by the moderators of this board, for to leave it says much more about the situation than could possibly be accomplished by deleting it. stephen nagler

There is no better or more experienced tinnitus doctor than Dr. Shemesh practicing today, both as a professional and a human being. This is what his patients feel. That is what I feel. It is really that simple. To imply that he is some kind of charlatan shows blatant ignorance of his background and practice and faith. Thank God he is available and willing to put in the long hours to help us. As for me, think what you may. I may be a bit glib at times, and make mistakes, but I am totally dedicated to loving and helping sufferers, even if it is in a lay capacity. I try to keep informed on the latest research through connections and reading -- and pass on what I know through the TINNITUS NEWSLETTTER FROM ISRAEL. Fortunately, my wife and family understand and support my efforts and the time I devote to doing my small part. To me, ANYONE seriously working on tinnitus, in its various aspects, and not making a killing on other people's misery, is sharing a glass at least half full. Thank you. Shavuah Tov from Israel. Posts: 7122 06/23/01 5:08 PM Retired Administrator Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Helping people is certainly worthwhile and there are certainly a number of good treatments that can help us adapt, but it still troubles me that the description of the treatment of Dr. Shemesh is so vague. Has he published findings in a respected medical journal? Have there been double blind well designed trials comparing his treatment with no treatment or with something else? If not, evidence of healing is anecdotal only. My opinion is that there is not one treatment that will help all of us habituate. We are individuals and need to be treated that way, but there are treatments that seem to have a good rate of success and you can easily find out what the treatment is by doing an internet search.

I imply nothing about Dr. Shemesh, Michael, I simply asked if your claims can be backed up by empirical data. That is a basic tenet of the scientific method.
