I've had tinnitus for 4 months (after receiving a tetenus shot) and I'm still hoping it will go away once the vaccine lightens up over time (hey a girl can dream can't she?). Anyhow, my question is for all you pro's who've had tinnitus for a few years or more. If I protect my hearing from this point on, can I 'assume' the tinnitus won't get much worse? Also, I will be flying to Asia in a few months. Does flying make it worse (permanently)? Should I consider not going to avoid damage?

Posts: 1885 08/05/03 12:03 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I can only tell you how it's been for me. I've had t for about a year and a half. That makes me a junior on this board. However, so far it's gotten better and not worse. Long-distance flights haven't had any bad effect on my tinnitus. I do believe my t started due to severe stress and neck problems though.

Has not gotten any worse but my two Cicadas(Ike and Mike) do sing 24/7/365, but who cares. My advise is LIVE YOUR LIFE as if there is or was no (T). Focus on your daily life and DO NOT LISTEN TO SEE IF YOUR (T) IS BETTER OR WORSE. Ignore it 100% of the time every day. Plus don't chase all the crap ads you hear about for cures. Just look at some of the current posts. Get on the plane and have a blast. Just use the normal precaution of being sure your ears are open and not plugged. Focus on LIFE not (T) and you will be fine. Have a great trip and a BETTER LIFE!!!!! Jim

Spend time with the people you love. While you can't do much about your tinnitus you can do a lot about the rest of your life. If everything else is good it'll be a lot easier to deal with t.

Posts: 3197 08/05/03 4:42 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Don't think you need to worry--I've had T since '84, and overall, it averages really no worse than then. Sharing an experience about Tetanus shots, I had one back in '92. After that, I had weird stuff with my ears. One in particular, no ENT could figure out. After the ear plugs were in for "x" number of hours, my rt. ear would make a clicking sound like an insect. After removing the plug, I would have a pronounced hearing loss in that ear for about two days, then it would return! I had flare-ups with inner ear spasms (Myoclonus), and other weird stuff. After the shot wore off a few years later, the rt. ear never clicks or shuts down, and the other isn't as often at all. Flu shot? Can't take 'em either! Makes my ear and facial spasms hit high orbit! I've tried skipping the flu shot the past two years, and have seen a marked improvement of NOT having as much of this stuff, tho I still have flare-ups sometimes. Some of us can hack vaccines, others? That would make a good research project! T.

Should I consider not going to avoid damage? HI Peebs I have flown many times and it has not affected the severity of my tinnitus. I have on occassion suffered from dizzy attacks but that is a consequence of having meniere's. I find that if you can sit in front of the wings the noise from the aircrafts engines is not as harsh. You should also take some ear plugs with you! The question as to whether your T will get any worse is in the "lap of the gods" but if you protect them from hazardous noise and avoid ototoxic drugs then you should be fairly confident that it will get no worse. regards Greg

That notwithstanding, it is something that one does become accustomed to, although one remains aware of it. I myself have tinnitus in my left ear, which is the annying one, for almost three years and I am aware of it, but it no logner makes me a wreck. Post here with any and all questions, comments, reflections on life and so forth and enjoy your trip to the Orient. Lynnears

As far as not concentrating on the T, I can say that I've adjusted fairly well over the past 4 months, but it's very hard not to 'listen' for it. What a great group of people you are. As others have said countless times, none of my friends or family understand how aggrevating this is at times. It's great to come here and know that 'someone gets you'. :-) Thanks again, and as I go for more shots for the trip, I'll just think positive thoughts! As a side note, someone asked if I was sure the tetenus shot caused the ringing. Well, it started 3 hours after I got the shot...so I'm saying yes. Ironically, the ringing is in the left ear .. and it's my right ear that was damaged years ago with a bad ear infection and eventually blown out at a loud bar. I suppose if the T was in my right ear, I would of been more inclined to believe it was from the previous damage and not the shot.

It still is getting better, so I would say you have to keep the best positive outlook you caan and start living your life as best as possible. Don't give up. Stew

Sometimes I can't but I get better with time/age. As mine was from a toxic injury, I don't expect it to vanish, short of some breakthrough in treatment. Remember, all difficulties, all challenges are opportunities for personal growth and learning. That's all there is to do anyway so our personal plagues just give us the chance to accelerate on this path. No, we'd be nuts to consciously choose this path, but once there, it's sink or swim.
