Posts: 779 06/21/05 7:46 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Most experts agree that there is a'some sort' of link between TMJ problems and tinnitus. there is a study done in texas that claims T reduction after TMJ treatment. The study seems skewed since the fast majority of the so to speak T patients had only transitional T for minutes each month... I believe that TMJ treatment at the best can prevent further worsening of T.

Well, I'm no expert - but I am unaware of any such link. I know that there's a lot of "talk" about the possibility of some sort of link in rare cases. But I personally know of no patients with intrusive tinnitus whose symptoms have been appreciably improved by treatment directed at the TMJ. Which is why I asked if anybody else knew of any. sp

Posts: 155 06/21/05 11:44 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I am going to enter into TMJ treatment to see if it will lessen or stop my Tinnitus. I see the Dentist this Saturday to get my bite splints. I had an X-Ray and a MRI on the TMJ's and there are problems with the joints. Mt tinnitus went through the roof 2 years ago after extensive dental work. I can modualte my Tinnitus by moving my Jaw and Pressising on the side of my face whre the Tinnitus is the worse. And I have found several research articles indicating a TMJ Tinnitus connection. I will get you updated. Best, Hugh

Does your take on TMJ / tinnitus include muscular problems such as tensor tymapani? or do you refer to the presumed TM Joint- T connection only?

There may or may not be a connection between the TMJ and tinnitus, but let's for a moment assume that there is - that in some cases intrusive tinnitus can be caused by a TMJ problem. OK. What I am saying is that even if that is the case, I am not at all convinced that correction of the TMJ problem will result in resolution of the intrusive tinnitus. In fact I am unaware of that ever occurring! On the other hand, I am aware of dozens and dozens of cases wherein TMJ experts have told their patients that their intrusive tinnitus is caused by a TMJ problem. They undergo all sorts of TMJ treatments - at all sorts of expense - but the tinnitus does not get appreciably better. Their headaches might get better, their jaw pain might improve, heck - their warts might go away for all I know. But the intrusive tinnitus, the reason they sought treatment in the first place, does not change. sp

Posts: 930 06/21/05 2:17 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Sp you are right. At least in my case because my dentist claimed I had my intrusive tinnitus because of a TMJ problem. I had no jaw or joint pain. He used this as an excuse because he could not accept my tinnitus was caused by a root canal gone wrong. I wont go into the details. So my dentist referred me to a top TMJ specialist. The first initial visit would cost over $300.00. This did not include anything except a look see type exam with a lot of fancy names thrown in the sentences. So I went to my MD for advice. Thankfully, I have the best doctor! He told me I did not have TMJ and this was an unnecessary route for me to take. He knew I did not have any symptoms of TMJ. He also was reluctant to give me an MRI because I had no classic symptoms of the very rare tumor. He is one smart man. So I say for those of you searching for the reason for your tinnitus to use caution and your good sense. If you have jaw pain that is a different issue. But as far as Dr. Schames, I have asked him a few questions and he has always answered honestly. He cant do any diagnosis at all without seeing you in person. But he is a good source for general information. 2goldcoins

There have been no randomized controlled trials of any sort, despite all the hoopla that has gone on since about 1920 about a purported connection. If you have evidence of TMJ damage, though, or pain or headaches, I think Dr. Schames would be a fine choice for an appointment--but not for tinnitus treatment! Jim

Posts: 1020 06/21/05 3:14 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Dear Frank Most of the replies you have received along with SP's reply I can quite honestly tell you are all mostly correct. I have a TMJ problem on my right side along with T in my right ear, we have a chap in the UK called Mr Cooper who is neither a dentist or a surgeon in any other field other than TMJ's in fact he does quite a few lectures on this subject, after he had sent me for an MRI on both sides of my TMJ he told me that I had a seased disc which was in the forward position and also the disc was possibly torn, I thought initially this was the best news of my life and all was going to be made better, he told me he was prepared to fix my TMJ but toldme there was probably no chance that it would cure my T but worse to come also told me that the operation could make me totally deaf in my right ear and I could have some facial paralyses, I am sorry to say that there has never been a case as I know of where someone has cured their T with any type of TMJ Surgery, anything else regarding the TMJ I cannot comment on. I refused the surgery and decided to have a splint fitted which I wear everyday which in time should give you some relief. You mentioned Dr Schames, I also contacted him, he is one heck of a nice guy, he even spoke to me while he was at work as I did require a second opinion, as with regards to Dr Schames and your head I think he is a Dentist and a TMJ specialists, there are other things that can be done if your TMJ is giving you trouble, therefore I would recommend you ask your Dr to refer you to someone like Dr Schames who in turn I think would give you great assistance and good advice but surgery is a no no. When I asked him how many of his patients have been treated for bruxism and reported improvement [now this guys has seen thoudands of tinnitus patients], he said "one". -Op
