My hyperacusis is more than 80% improved over two years, from severe to the point where I'm almost normal.

This, I believe, was due mainly to my lifestyle, i.e., diet, exercise, positiveness, which calmed my nerves. You see, I believe H is mainly a limbic (emotions) problem, and when you are able to relax sufficiently the problem relieves itself. However, this is nigh impossible initially because all sounds are painful. So it takes time. White noise helps speed up the process.

I think we can safely say H isn't a nerve problem, because if it were then drugs could help it. But they don't.

The things that still hurt my ears are my dog barking and very high pitch sounds. I've also tested and proven that my ears react to air pressure alone - regardless of noise. If I close my car door with all the windows closed, the build up in air pressure pushes against my ear drum and causes pain. But if I open a window so that the air has somewhere to go, there's no pain, even though the noise is the same or louder. This tells me the problem is air pressure, and sound is air pressure, at least initially before it becomes fluid pressure followed by an electro-chemical signal. So perhaps H is also caused by the middle ear. Who knows?

Very sorry to read of your distress. The only thing I could suggest is a salt-free diet, lots of water, exercise (1 or 2 hours a day walking, preferably in nature), no caffeine (chocolate, tea, coke), no MSG or spices, and keep relaxed and positive. I hope things will improve for you soon. Please keep us posted.
