Posts: 92 07/09/08 5:02 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Tags : None I saw a job advertised for a home satellite and cable installer which I would not mind doing, the thing is I am not sure if I should apply for it because I was thinking of probable drilling involved and most likely through brick walls too. It's things like this that make it hard for me to find suitable work that I actually would enjoy doing what with my noise induced tinnitus, maybe I could do it and wear ear defenders and/or ear plugs but the vibration might make my tinnitus worse, what do you think?

And yes the vibration from a hammer drill will most likely make your T worse and no earplugs will not protect you from vibrations. Sorry, I feel your pain. -Dave

Posts: 13708 07/10/08 12:33 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	There is little definitive evidence that the noise from drills etc can cause tinnitus, in fact it is hard to state for certain that most tinnitus is noise induced. As Oz said, go for it and be sensible about ear protection. freddie.

Posts: 15610 07/10/08 1:57 AM ADMIN Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Dentists are in the top 3 target occupations for the firm that makes my earplugs and thats because they use drills all day long.A dentists drill is small beer compared with the ones you would need for fitting aerials.Thus I agree with Dave this is a job you dont want,its all very well doing the odd DIY job with a drill but not all week. Advice on this will always be split but earplugs or not I wouldnt take this job.Let us know what you decide. cheers

I do voluntary work on a weekend and sometimes use power drills, big grinders hammers etc. I wear the correct ear protection and im fine. Just remember to wear it. Dont let the t win! Mick

Using a hammer drill (to drill through concrete and mortar) while wearing ear muffs or good ear plugs poses no problems for me, as does using other power tools. A month ago I installed several shutters on brick and I had to use a hammer drill to drill the mounting holes in the mortar. I used ear muffs when doing so. I now notice many other folks using ear protection when using power tools too, so do not worry about what others think who may be around you. It is the smart thing to do. You should NOT alter your career plans, there is no need to, if you use hearing protection. The tool vibration should not bother tinnitus at all. It does not bother mine in the least. My tinnitus is very obtrusive, constant, and in both ears, so I really do have it. --Nate

I remember using an angle grinder in a job once and it was quite loud, I put the ear defenders on and they really made a differnce. P.S. Did you use ear protection when drilling Dave? You say you use power tools and wear hearing protection and have no ill effects from it. The point you are missing is in construction you do this day in and day out 8, 9, 10 hours a day and at times are exposed to noise that easily exceeds 110dB for hours at a time. (A hammer drill is 110 dB, oh wait we need power - throw in a generator, oh wait its winter - throw in a propane heater, an air compressor, a nail gun, a chop saw, etc, etc). You really think hearing protection is going to be enough for someone who already has T??? The other problem is you have no control over the necessary and sometimes unnecessarily loud things other workers are doing. When you are working around the house and have had enough you can stop working. Try this at your job -- especially a construction job-- and see how that works for you. And hammer drilling is especially bad (was for me anyway). And remember that you not only have to hammer drill to get through a concrete wall you have to hammer drill to attach things to concrete as well. Anyway if you really want to do this please have the sense to quit the minute you determine your T is getting worse because of it. I waited too long because I liked my job and now I and regret that decision every day. Good luck and if you go for it don't think twice about using hearing protection. If your t wasn't noise induced (and I disagree with Freddie here incidentally because all the evidence I've seen points to the vast majority of T having a noise insult factor, the SHL, Menieries, ototoxic drug routes while all represented by people here are far less common) I'd maybe suggest you give it a trial run with the approriate protection but in your case I don't think I would. Since getting T "I've gone for it" quite a few times reulting in one permanent increase that took me nearly a year to rehabituate to and more recently (last week) another bit of bravado - won't let tinnitus rule me etc. - that I'm now rethinking after 6 consecutive nights of no sleep since with my good ear wailing. Ulitimately I think asking a question like this on the forum, although I've done it muself so I'm not criticising, is totally pointless. You'll get answers that will reassure you and ones that'll do the exact opposite and you'll be left back where you started - unsure. There is no definitive answer anyone here can give becuse they don't have your ears, you'd have to try it and see and therein lies the rub.
