That's funny, I was just reading this news at a Dutch website for the hearing injured (http://www.doof.nl/Nieuw-...met-geluid-35-1612.htm).
Sounds like a pretty big breakthrough indeed. And it's just one year away from us. Let's keep an eye on this. Just hope it isn't something experimental like German laser therapy, but this sounds pretty serious. I've translated the Dutch post for the English-reading people here: "The German reserach centre Jülich has developed a device which reduces the tinnitus burden a lot. This device corrects the disturbance in the brains (causing tinnitus) with acoustic signals. The device, which is worn in the ear, emits acoustic signals which 'defeats' the neurons emitting the wrong signals (causing the tinnitus). The stimulation caused by the device will transform the network of nerves in the brains, resulting in a heavy reduction of tinnitus. In more than 70% of the subjects the tinnitus symptons reduced significantly and strongly. The device is being tested clinically at this moment and should be released next year."

we all know God hates scientists but I'll say it anyway...thank God for brilliant scientists. very exciting even though it will most likely be more
expensive than even neuronomics.
i don't know if I misunderstood the translation but it sounds like the device would be less like a hearing aid (worn all the time) and more like a neuronomics device (where it's worn for periods of time) and hopefully is able to reprogram neurons in the brain permanently. Is this what it sounded like to everyone else? |

I don't think it's an "in the ear device". It sounds like an implant. The same people are/have developed a neurostimulation device for
parkinsons, so it sounds like they may have figured out the equation for silencing tinnitus

When I put my head under a high pressured shower I sometimes get temporary relief maybe up to a minute. Is this a form of neurostimulation?
Or, is a neurostimulation device another form of residual inhibition? Pool |

No it isn't a brain implant. It is a device worn in the ear.
"An acoustic stimulator, the patients from the form of a hearing aid a few hours a day is taken, this should afford. The first clinical study proves: With more than 70 percent of the subjects were the symptoms significantly, and permanently." |

"with acoustic signals." Another brand of sound therapy? We all know the percentages of success with those like Neuromonics. Neuromonics stated a
higher than 70% success if I remember correctly. Anyone with the technological knowledge and that can tell us the difference and can put it in simple terms
that a lot of us out here can understand?

More information about this hearing aid and an interview with Prof. Dr. Tass from the Jülich research on German television: http://www.wdr.de/mediathek/html/regional/2009/05/29/lokalzeit-aachen-tinnitus.xml |

It's definitely some sort of sound treatment, however this claims not to mask/habituate but really to reduce tinnitus symptons. And it looks like they are
testing it right now, trying to get scientific support for this new kind of treatment.
I don't really know how the Neuromonics device works, but isn't that just some kind of masking unit? And they don't have true scientifical proof their units works, do they?

Thank you Atreides for posting this. I am curious to know what part of the brain this device supposedly affects: the amygdala? That is the region that is key
in tinnitus, is it not? It will be very interesting to see how this research plays out.
I am wondering too, what the make-up is of the 30 percent- or so- that did not see a change. Did they share any defining characteristics, like hearing loss, or something else? Questions and more questions! Looking forward to some answers!

I've sent them an e-mail too. I specifically asked about the effects of the device for noise-induces tinnitus patients. I live in the Netherlands but the
German place where the research centre is isn't far away for me, so I'm very interested in it.

Has anyone sent them an e-mail requesting more information?I sent an e-mail yesterday asking: "How is neurostimulation different from of residual inhibition?" I mentioned to them about the TSMB. Pool
